On behalf of the Mageia system administration team (aka sysadm team), I am happy to announce that we finally managed to rack our first servers in Marseille on Friday,\u00a0despite the gas-oil shortage, the strikes, and the various issues we had!<\/div>\n

All of this would not have been possible without the generous offer of Ielo.net<\/a> and\u00a0Lost Oasis<\/a>, who offered to host our servers in their data-center in Marseille.\u00a0They have been already hosting zarb.org, TuxFamily and LeaLinux since several years,\u00a0and provided a lot of support to free software in France.<\/div>\n

Also this would\u00a0not\u00a0not\u00a0have\u00a0been possible without the help of the several donors who\u00a0helped us with hardware and money to buy disks and to travel to the south\u00a0of the country. Again, many thanks to all of you.<\/div>\n

And finally, this would not have been possible without the hard work of my team mates, Damien\u00a0and Nicolas who drove from Paris to Marseille, fetched the pieces and assembled the servers, and\u00a0without the help of Pascal who lent\u00a0us a hand when setting everything\u00a0up, and who volunteered\u00a0to drive to the server room and\u00a0 push the button in case of problems. We hope we will not ask him\u00a0to do it too\u00a0many times, and we would love to have\u00a0remote administration, but this was not a option given the fact that only one server had one RAC.<\/div>\n

So let’s welcome Alamut, Ecosse, Jonund, Valstar and soon Fiona. For those that wonder\u00a0where does the names come from, we have played a simple game on the sysadm list (which\u00a0is badly configured at the\u00a0moment I am writing\u00a0this but\u00a0it\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0public\u00a0mailing list\u00a0by design, this will be fixed later).<\/div>\n
For the techno addicts\u00a0that would\u00a0like to\u00a0see the hardware specs, we will document them on the wiki later,\u00a0once we have set\u00a0up\u00a0the permanent\u00a0wiki.<\/div>\n

So the next steps of\u00a0infrastructure deployment, after some deserved rest\u00a0(in what’s left of the\u00a0weekend), will\u00a0be to set\u00a0up the basic infrastructure for administration (ie puppet, svn, accounts, etc).<\/div>\n
Then we will proceed into migrating the DNS from zarb.org to our servers, and set\u00a0up a first\u00a0LDAP\u00a0directory to hold accounts, as this is a central component in our planned infrastructure.\u00a0After that we will have to setup SQL servers, apache, and some web applications like\u00a0Epoll, to\u00a0start working on team creation.
