{"id":224,"date":"2011-01-08T23:17:00","date_gmt":"2011-01-08T21:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mageia.org\/?p=224"},"modified":"2018-01-30T00:42:07","modified_gmt":"2018-01-30T00:42:07","slug":"mageia-joins-open-invention-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mageia.org\/en\/2011\/01\/08\/mageia-joins-open-invention-network\/","title":{"rendered":"Mageia joins Open Invention Network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mageia.org has just joined <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openinventionnetwork.com\/\">Open Invention Network<\/a> as a licensee.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Software_patent\">Software patents<\/a> are a threat to Free Open Source Software development and to free innovation at large.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Open_Invention_Network\">OIN<\/a>&#8216;s goal is to minimize\/eliminate software patent threats within the Linux ecosystem. It helps by insuring confidence, free innovation and growth within the Linux stack by taking a collaborative and defensive stance against software patents.<\/p>\n<p>OIN provides its members and licensees with the means to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cross-license to each other, at no cost, their patents relative to Linux;<\/li>\n<li>Benefit from OIN-owned pool of patents,<\/li>\n<li>Gather forces and defend against software patent threats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While this doesn&#8217;t resolve the question of software patents, it is a great help to defend against those sorts of threats. Mageia.Org strives to <a href=\"http:\/\/mageia.org\/en\/about\/values\/\">understand, design, experiment and release software<\/a> to empower people in their daily lives; software patents are not going to help in this regard. So we welcome OIN and any other initiative that may help reducing software patents impact and abuses.<\/p>\n<p>OIN members include Sony, <a href=\"http:\/\/www-03.ibm.com\/linux\/community.html\">IBM<\/a>, NEC, Red Hat, Philips, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novell.com\/communities\/coolsolutions\/?p=81\">Novell<\/a>.
