Mageia 3 beta 1 waits for your tests

Finally here is Mageia 3 beta 1. This first beta release was a bit tricky as it comes with some major new features in installer. GRUB2 has been included as an option for now.

Using DVDs with classical installer you will be proposed to install some proprietary drivers and/or firmwares. Just choose to add nonfree media.

We need your feedbacks on these isos. Please have a look on:

QA team is waiting for your bug reports! Please help us to make Mageia 3 meet high quality level.

Enjoy!

K9COPY is dead in upstream so it’s dropped from mageia, just use vlc to rip your dvd,you can get guide from google how to use it.

Tried it, won’t finish install freezes at the remove unused hardware / packages part. It is a shame since I wanted to try out KDE SC 4.10

It would be nice if “Download (coming)” would be changed to the link: http://www.mageia.org/en/3/ as it’s already there for some days.

Will Mageia Final feature a 3.7 kernel? It adds better support for opensource drivers both nouveau and radeon.

  17. Greg says:

Note there is a nasty i915 bug or three lurking in the 3.7 kernels, if you are using i915 (GMA3000-4500) chipsets. They are doing a lot of cleanup work on i915 ATM. It WILL be fixed, ASAP AFAICT. (I ran the beta1 with no graphics related issues, but YMMV)

kde iaora install crashes kde settings workspace appearance, irrespective of what some might think of this theme (i love it) its included in repo and is broken, or kde workspace is.

also please please please re-theme kde that halo garish theme is horrible (IMHO) and please set taskbar back to mageia classic as default like it was in mga1, plasma taskbar is full of unnecessary add ons .

I’ve been playing with Mageia 3 for a few weeks on a factory-refurbished HP P7-1234 Pavilion. It started out at a failure-to-install level, and has gradually approached being bug-free. Congratulations!

    Comments:
    (1) Totem (Videos) still fails to launch, providing the following message:

(totem:11273): Gdk-ERROR **: The program ‘totem’ received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was ‘BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)’.
    (Details: serial 151 error_code 1 request_code 155 minor_code 19)
    (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
    Trace/breakpoint trap

    (2) Full video-card functionality required adding the “non-free” source.

    (3) Full VLC media support (MP4a) required adding the “tainted” source.

    (4) Firefox thinks I want to use Eng_GB. I’d rather stay with Eng_US. Call it a quirk.

Thanks again. Mageia 3 is looking pretty solid here. Seeing around 500 new updates each day is impressive too. That’s a lot of work being done.

  22. Karl says:

Well, the January 16 updates have introduced a few quirks. The Gnome desktop once again displays “AMD Testing Use Only,” the bottom taskbar allowing access to four virtual desktops is gone, and the neat easy-to-use text menu of Applications and Places has been replaced with a “favorites” Applications icon bar. The system is still usable, but clumsier and more time-consuming, requiring several steps to carry out what a single step did previously.

PS: “Videos” (Totem) is still nonfunctional here, giving this message:
“Some necessary plug-ins are missing. Make sure that the program is correctly installed.”

Though Firefox 17.0.2 shows my language as English_US, its spell-check keeps trying to correct the US “or” to the GB “our” in various words. This is a very minor quirk, though.

Thanks for all the hard work!
