Second Call: Artwork needed for Mageia 4

Mageia 4 is nearly in place… now all it needs is a beautiful face!

We still need original artwork to serve as the official wallpaper for Mageia 4, as well as for installer elements, website motif, CD/DVD labels, and so much more. Your work could become the first thing people see, when they encounter one of the world’s safest, most stable, and best-supported open source operating systems.

We absolutely must have your ideas ready in time for the Release Candidate, but it would be far better to include it in a Beta release. So please, check out the Artwork Guidelines on the Mageia Wiki for all the hints and resources you need, to create Mageia 4’s new visual identity.

For release date and deadline information, please consult the Mageia Blog post here. Please submit your artwork to the Flickr pool.

Farewell Mageia 2

Mageia 2It’s that time again. Time for us to say farewell to an old friend.

It really doesn’t seem very long since we bid farewell to Mageia 1 but it is time for us to wave a fond goodbye to Mageia 2 as well.

Mageia 2 was released on May 22nd 2012 and so is due to reach its end-of-life on November 22nd 2013, which is this Friday! You can see the lifecycle of Mageia releases here. There will be no further updates issued for Mageia 2 after this date so if you haven’t yet upgraded  to Mageia 3, it is now time.

Support for Mageia 3 will continue until at least November 19th 2014 and Mageia 4 is due to be released just before FOSDEM, at the start of February next year.

A huge thank you to all who contribute to make Mageia what it is today, and what it can become. People make Mageia, there are no employees, so if you reported a bug, fixed a bug, donated money, posted on the forum or mailing lists, helped with testing, documentation, translation, artwork, emails or even just mentioned Mageia to your friends, this includes you!

If you would like to get more involved, whatever your skill level or free time, there are lots of things you can do to help and you will be most welcome. It is very rewarding to know that you helped to make Mageia!

Reorganizing Mageia 4 schedule

After Mageia 4 beta 1 release, we had a council meeting as usually happens every 2 weeks. Due to the delay of beta 1 release, it was decided to reorganize our schedule. The date of the final release will not change.

Here are the main dates:

  • Beta 2: 2013/12/09
  • Translations freeze: 2013/12/21
  • Release freeze: 2013/12/22
  • Release Candidate: 2014/01/06

And now we go back to work!

A long way to the mirrors: Mageia 4 beta 1 is finally out

success

Finally we did it! Mageia 4 beta 1 has been, for sure, the most difficult release we had to face since the beginning of Mageia project. Lots of good and bad reasons here and again some improvements to be done on our development process.

Still beta 1 isos are now available for tests and we need your feedbacks to improve and fasten the coming Mageia 4. A lot of work has been done on various topics: installer, dracut, isos boot, desktop environments… You can have more details on release notes.

(xkcd – http://xkcd.com/349/)

This release was also the occasion to rebuild all the distribution and then check everything is ok for the final version. We are now in version freeze period which means no new version can be submitted by packagers unless some good reasons (bug fix, security fix).

Download Mageia 4 beta 1 on public mirrors or from Mageia web site.

Before testing it, please have a look at the Errata. You can report any new bugs found on Mageia Bugzilla. We need your tests especially on installer and hardware detection.

Finally a big thank to our QA team. We tried to make them mad, but they resisted to 2 weeks of testing.

Enjoy!

Some more time again for the first beta version of Mageia 4

It seems witches and pixies decided to spend more time with us. We are, at the moment, working on finalizing the isos for this beta 1 version after a huge amount of work on some critical bugs in the installer and some desktop packaging.

The end of the coming week-end should be the right time for the release, so stay tuned!

Special thanks to the QA team for its patience.
