Board election results

It was a little over a year since the first Mageia.Org board was
elected, so it was time to re-elect one-third as required by the Mageia
statutes
.

Michael Scherer and Wolfgang Bornath have both resigned from their
board positions. We thank them both for their great work, and wish them
well. After their resignations, we had two positions to fill.

Following the election, we welcome Nicolas Vigier and Oliver Burger
to the Mageia board.

Last Monday the new board had its first meeting, and the first official
act was to elect the executive committee: Chairman, Secretary and
Treasurer. Outgoing office-bearers were Anne Nicolas, Chairman; Michael
Scherer, Secretary; Damien Lallement, Treasurer.

The election results were: Anne Nicolas, Chairman; Romain d’Alverny,
Treasurer; Oliver Burger, Secretary.

The board is now discussing how to promote Mageia in the coming year,
and how to make the association stronger in the long run.

Bug off!

From Remco Rijnders

The past months, Mageia has been hard at work getting Alpha and Beta releases out for our upcoming release Mageia 2. With Beta 2 out of the door, and the release candidate on the way, it is time to reflect for a moment on our current situation.

A lot of hard work has been done by a lot of people. Developers, QA & and triaging teams, and not in the least beta testers have worked hard to improve our distribution to the best of our abilities and to ensure that Mageia 2 will become a release for everyone to enjoy.

During the testing, a number of bugs have been found which have been marked as release blockers. While we are hard at work on resolving them, there still is a lot to be done, and we can’t release while any release blocking bugs are still outstanding.

To this end, we’d like to invite everyone to participate in Mageia’s first bug squashing party!

The bug squash party will take place this weekend from friday 4 PM CET, to monday 10 PM CEST in #mageia-bugsquad on the Freenode IRC network.

We invite you to join in during this weekend to help us fix as many bugs as we can! Everyone can help! If you are a packager, we encourage you to get outside of your comfortzone and also have a look for example at installer bugs, wifi bugs, systemd issues, and so on! As end user you can help as well, we are still looking at increasing testing coverage to see if we catch all major issues before going gold with our release. Some bugs only manifest themselves on certain hardware profiles… if your computer is affected by one of these bugs, we especially appreciate your availability to help with testing to see if we can squash those nasty bugs!

Over the weekend, we will have a special page on our wiki where we will track the status of all issues we’re working on, as well as a daily update of our progress and work outstanding on the mailinglists -discuss and -dev.

We hope to see you on IRC in #mageia-bugsquad this weekend to help us make Mageia even better and make Mageia 2 a rock solid release!

General Assembly and first year review for Mageia.Org

As we said in a previous post, Mageia.Org’s General Assembly took place during FOSDEM, on 04/02/2012, in Bruxelles. The moral report was presented at the GA, while the financial report was sent later. Both reports have been approved by association members. Here are links to the two reports:

Some questions were asked during the presentation:

  • Wiki translation ( obgr_seneca ): the question was about what to do for a translated wiki, ie should it be used for locale content or just translation. Oliver said he would take care of organizing the discussion about it.
  • User communication, ( obgr_seneca ): Oliver reminded that he participated in the round table.
  • Pledge from Rosa and invitation to participate ( peroyvind): Per Øyvind explained to us that he was talking with Rosalab about having an umbrella organisation, with a pledge to help such a foundation with money. We answered that we would not be opposed but without more information, we cannot answer much, and so we would take a look once more information is public.
  • Mageia app db ( panu ): panu wanted to know the status of mageia app db, and we redirected him to the developers of the project

People who attended the GA:  Oliver Burger (obgr_seneca), Anne Nicolas (ennael), Michael Scherer (misc), Oliver Thauvin (nanar), Claire Revillet, Marianne Lombard (jehane), Thomas Backlund (tmb), Arnaud Patard (rtp), Nicolas Vigier (boklm), Romain D’Alverny (rda), Maarten Vanraes (al13n), Colin Guthrie (coling), Raphael (rapsys), Chris Ringeval (eatdirt), Matteo Passoti (pasmatt), Marja van Waes (marja), Sebastian (sebsebseb), Panu (xrg), Remco Rijnders (remi), Per Øyvind Karlsen, Guillaume Rousse (guillomovitch).

Mageia 2 is approaching: test Mageia 2 beta 1

We are now entering last run for Mageia 2 release: first beta is now available for tests. Beta step is essential as it will focus on fixing bugs and improving integration for all distribution. This is now also the main focus for our packagers team. They are waiting for your reports!

Get more information on Beta 1:

Special thanks to our small but great QA team who performed pre release tests.

While DVD isos are available we still have work in progress on live CDs. We did lack of time for alpha release until now. Work is starting again on it and we do expect to be able to upload them soon. Sorry for the delay.
