Mageia 2 Artwork Contest

Mageia needs your help with the artwork for Mageia 2.

We’re short on artists, so we’re calling on everyone in the Mageia community who has any talent with graphics.

If you would like to see your favorite photo in Mageia as an alternative background, or if you can make an outstanding graphic that fits into Mageia’s look and feel, we hope you’ll support us: contribute your work to Mageia and to the Mageia community as a whole.

Rules
How to participate?
Mageia will provide 1 official background and 10 additional backgrounds to complete the official design. If you’d like to participate, it’s easy:

  1. Send your images and/or pictures to http://www.flickr.com/groups/mageia-artwork/ until March 1st 2012.
  2. Mageia will choose one for the official background, plus 10 others from different contributors to be included in the “additional backgrounds” package
  3. If one of your contributions is chosen to be the official background or the best alternative background, you’ll receive a Mageia goodies pack with a Mageia t-shirt, Mageia stickers and a Live CD.

Don’t forget that the two people sending us the winning backgrounds (the one that is going to be the official background, and the one sending the best alternate one) will receive prizes:

Damn, a photo cannot be scaled like that. I suppose you mean cropped instead? So we should keep in mind top and base of the photo will be cropped on 16:9 screens?

    • obgr_seneca says:

Yes, you are right of course.
Photos can’t be scaled without looking funny. And graphical designs can only be scaled to a certain degree without looking funny as well.
So what we do need is wallpapers that can be cropped to the different screen geometries.

      • Max says:

Or create several versions of the same image, at different ratios (but large, because scaling down works better than scaling up).
Another alternative is to use SVG files, in KDE at least they can be used as a wallpaper. Just bear in mind that any transparency in the SVG file will be just black.
Also, I would very much like to hear from somebody using GNOME on whether SVG files can be used as a wallpaper.

        • obgr_seneca says:

Well, I don’t know about the other desktops like lxde, xfce and the simple window managers.
So I think jpg/png would be better.
But they can be created easily from svgs, so if you create svgs, that would actually be great as well.

I guess there is a technical issue here.

Can we send in photos / images … that is cropped to fit at least three scales … 4:3, 16:9, 16:10 (not sure what etc. means here).

Perhaps Mageia could provide a finite list of proprotions for those who wish to submit photos / images that will distort if scaled automatically.

  5. codergazer says:

Did I understand that correctly: the image needs to imcorporate the Mageia logo and name? Where can we find a copy of the logo and name to add?

  6. @codergazer Good point, i was just going to create my logo and name from scratch but if there’s a master file available that would be helpful. If anyone knows plz do post a link

  7. anne says:

You can find the winning logo on google images.

But my question is what is the “official font” used for this logo

Can anyone at Mageia help >

  8. dro says:

just make sure the artworks got blue in it

  9. rda says:

Mageia logo is available from http://www.mageia.org/en/about/media/ – please use only this source, and not other that you would find on the Internet.

And there is no official font associated with this logo as of yet; it was completely drawn from scratch, past year – and we could not get in touch with the designer since then.

However, we do have a list of fonts used for the Web site and other docs: http://www.mageia.org/en/charter.html

  10. rda says:

You can find Mageia logo here: http://www.mageia.org/en/about/media/ – please use only this very source, and not other files or images you would find on the Internet.

The font used to make the logo is totally hand made, from scratch, for this very logo. The designer did not push it to a full alphabetic font and we could not reach him since then either. However, you may use fonts we do select for the current Web site, see http://www.mageia.org/en/charter.html – you may suggest others as well, of course.
