We are replacing Mageia 2 background image

It has come to our attention that we have included artwork in Mageia 2 which we did not have permission to include.

We are very sorry about it – we did not know, and now that we do, we are putting it right just as fast as we can.

How?

Unfortunately we received artwork in our Mageia 2 artwork contest that the submitter had derived from an original work, that they did not have a license to use. We now realise that we need to check people’s copyright assertions more fully, and we’re working on ways to make sure we do that in future.

The Mageia 2 artwork contest clearly indicated that the proposals should be licensed under CC-By-SA, however we probably put too much trust in the people who submitted artwork for the contest, and someone submitted a background that was derived from another work.

In the future, we will be more cautious when validating the license of the submissions, asking for a more formal public statement about authorship and license, checking and publishing all source files used to create the image.

Fixing it

We have now talked with the original artist, and he has been kind enough to relicense his artwork and its derivative for use by Mageia. This means that those of us who have installed from the original Mageia 2 ISOs are not in breach of his copyright.

However, we are rebuilding the ISOs, including the Credits, to include his original artwork – which is beautiful! – and building updates to the necessary rpms. So if people download the rebuilt ISOs they will be getting the properly-licensed artwork, and if you have already installed Mageia 2, your system will be updated automatically. We will also include the updates in Cauldron.

Credit goes to pr09studio

The original artist is pr09studio, and his portfolio can be found at http://pr09studio.deviantart.com. We are very grateful to him for his understanding, and for licensing his beautiful work so we can use it.

Next

And from now on, when we are inviting people to submit artwork for inclusion in Mageia, we will be very very careful about checking that they have the rights to it!

Now feast your eyes on this…

Answer from Luiz

Here is a copy of his comment on this post to complete all this

I talked to the original artist, and I asked him apologize for the misunderstanding.

I’d like to do the same for the Mageia community, but I have no idea how I can do this.

I’ve found the background on a website, where the “artist” said he was the original creator, and I could modify the original file and I could redistriubui it again.

But that information was wrong, and I was mistaken, for he was not the true artist, and unfortunately I just found out today that the true artist is the “pr09studio” and his license does not allow what I did.

I apologize for any inconvenience caused by Mageia community, and, if possible, I’d like someone to add my words in the post above, as a way for me to apologize.

Mageia comes full circle

We have two very interesting news items to share today, just a few days before our Mageia 2 final release.

Mandriva Linux community project

Mandriva recently announced  that it will transfer the responsibility of the Mandriva Linux distribution to an independent entity. We would very much like to express our very best wishes for this new entity.

Mageia.Org’s board was contacted privately by Mr. Croset before this announcement, to discuss the opportunity to have Mageia representatives joining their working group (unfortunately the discussion had to be private, as it was requested by Mandriva to keep the information private until their announcement). Ultimately, the Mageia.Org board declined the offer and for clarity we are publishing the reasons for this decision here:

  • the Mageia.org governance model is good and has been defined for very specific reasons: independence of the Mageia project from commercial constraints, democratic elections, meritocratic inclusion, no appointed or reserved positions.It would have been, in our view, an excellent open platform for Mandriva to join. We do not yet know the reasons why Mandriva ultimately felt this was not a good fit for them at this time.
  • We have invested a lot of time and energy over many conversations and discussions to define Mageia on several levels. And we continue to release updates and the betas and RCs for Mageia 2, and we regularly put our contributions back into the Linux ecosystem.
  • We do not have much information about the directions in which this future entity might go, nor about the goals of each of the potential participants.
  • We do not wish to dilute our (small) resources further on a new thing to define and build; we think our priorities are elsewhere right now.
  • All our work is free software, so we can already share code and collaborate with other distributions when needed, without joining a new entity.

Mandriva: welcome back to the party!

Mageia is gaining a derivative product

In other news, Mandriva announced that they will use the Mageia distribution as a technical platform for their new Business Server product.

This decision is the result of discussions that took place between Mandriva and Mageia. A new entity in the Mageia ecosystem is good news.

To make everything clear and avoid any misunderstanding, we would like to remind you of a few points:

  • Mageia is free software, so it is of course possible for anybody to create Mageia derivatives;
  • Mageia welcomes contributions from all individuals and companies as long as they follow the rules of the project;
  • Mageia has a well defined governance model and organization, and there is no plan to change it;
  • Mageia is independent of any company.

And that’s not all!

Mageia 2 is coming next!

Almost there: download Mageia 2 RC – new date for final release

Here we are. After some delay, Mageia 2 RC is available for the last tests before the final release. We’ve included a lot of bug fixes to the installation and upgrade since the beta 3 release and we hope it will give you a very nice experience with Mageia.

More information on this last development release:

This is the last chance to test and report feedback about any problems you may encounter with this future release. We need you!

As a consequence of the RC delay, the final release will be postponed to the 22nd of May to give us enough time to manage RC reports and build the final ISOs.

Thanks again for your patience and stay tuned!
